Review: Kit Kat Cones

The packaging for Kit Kat Cones.

Kit Kat Cones feature sundae cones that consist of a sugar cone with an inner coating of fudge, filled with ice cream (technically "frozen dairy dessert"), and covered on top with a chocolaty coating mixed with crushed Kit Kat wafers.

I paid $4.99 on sale (normally $8.99) for a box of eight cones. The cones come in two flavors: Wafer with Fudge and Chocolate Wafer.

Wafer with Fudge includes vanilla frozen dairy dessert with a small dollop of fudge sauce in the middle of the scoop/knob, while Chocolate Wafer comes with chocolate frozen dairy dessert and does not include a fudge dollop.

Two Kit Kat Cones unwrapped and next to a quarter.

For the most part, Kit Kat Cones taste almost exactly like Drumsticks (both are manufactured by Nestle). The only different is the addition of the crust Kit Kat wafers instead of other inclusions (i.e. peanuts, cookies, etc.). The wafer bits offer a nice delicately layered crispiness when I came across it but only when I came across a decent-sized bit. For the most part, the crispy wafer factor was few and far in between.

Other than the Kit Kat bits, the chocolaty coating offered a sweet and robust chocolate flavor with a smooth melty texture and a bit of crispy crunch if you bit into it. The underlying ice cream was smooth, airy, and creamy. The vanilla was mild, while the chocolate had a bit more punch. The fudge sauce dollop was tiny but added an extra chocolaty lift once I got to it.

The sugar cone was softened. I'm guessing that's due to a freezer problem (either mine or the stores) as I've had mixed experiences with Drumsticks and the cone has ranged from crispy to soft on various occasions.

Taken altogether, I quite enjoyed Kit Kat Cones as I also like Drumsticks in general. They're nothing fancy but deliver a nice assortment of sundae textures with chocolate and vanilla flavors. They really lack in the Kit Kat department however and I can't help but wonder if putting a single Kit Kat bar in each sundae cone might have been the better approach.
