Review: Mod Pizza - Red Velvet No Name Cake

Mod Pizza's Red Velvet No Name Cake wrapped in foil next to a quarter.

Mod Pizza's Red Velvet No Name Cake features a puck of red velvet cake with a center of cream cheese filling, covered in red icing and white heart-shaped sprinkles.

I bought the 2.65-oz cake for $3.89.

The No Name Cake is basically Mod's version of a Hostess Ding Dong but is about twice the size. There was a fairly thick layer of slightly waxy icing around the cake (the better to ensure that it's kept moist) but there was some creamy richness to it.

The cake inside was moist with a deep red color and a mild cocoa flavor. The filling was creamy and thick but lacked the tanginess that I expected from cream cheese and red velvet cake in general. The lack of acidity left the Red Velvet No Name Cake with very little in the way of flavor variance as you had sweet and creamy with a bit of chocolaty notes thrown in.

The heart-shaped sprinkles added a light sweetness and crunch to the proceedings.

Overall, Mod Pizza's Red Velvet No Name Cake was ultimately a bit too boring for my liking. There's generally a tangy component to red velvet cake, whether it be from buttermilk, vinegar, and/or cream cheese, and the lack here just left me with a sweet, mildly chocolaty cake.
