Review: Taco Bell - Cheesy Chicken Crispanada

Taco Bell's Cheesy Chicken Crispanada features a crispy pastry dough filled with seasoned shredded chicken and melted three-cheese blend. It comes with a cup of Spicy Ranch for dipping. It's basically Taco Bell's take on a savory empanada.

I paid $3.79 for one.

The Crispanada is pretty small. It reminded me of the Beef Crunchito (which now that I think about it is a weird name for a taco) in size. It was roughly about 3/4 of the size of a regular taco but a bit plumper.

Like the discontinued Caramel Apple Empanada before it, the Cheesy Chicken Crispanada sported a thin, bubbly coating on one side of its flaky, pastry crust. The coating was super crispy with an audible cracking when you bite into or break it. It's probably the most unique aspect of the new fast food menu item.

I broke open the Crispanada carefully and it was warm inside. The chicken was tender and juicy. It wasn't all that meaty in texture though as it mostly came in small shreds. The cheese and seasoning melted together into a pale orange goo that occasional spilled out as I ate. You probably want to be careful if you're eating one of these in the car.

Flavor-wise, the filling was cheesy with a savory seasoning to it. Given that, the default of Spicy Ranch dipping sauce seemed a bit of an odd decision as Taco Bell's Spicy Ranch is mostly creamy and tangy with just a hint of heat (then again most of their dipping sauce options are mayo-based). I recommend just eating it with one of Taco Bell's hot sauce packets for more of a contrast. I had to be careful trying to dip the Crispanada as the chicken would threaten to fall out.

Overall, Taco Bell's Cheesy Chicken Crispanada was tasty, cheesy, and crispy but was a bit pricey for what amounts to a snack item. In comparison, Taco Bell's Soft Taco with chicken is around the same size for $2.49, while the 3 Cheese Chicken Flatbread Melt includes more chicken for $2.49.
