Review: Wendy's - Steakhouse Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe

Wendy's new Steakhouse Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe features a junior hamburger patty seasoned with Montreal steakhouse seasoning, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, seasoned butter spread, and a garlic aioli sauce made with a combination of roasted garlic, onion, and Dijon mustard, on a plain hamburger bun.

The price of admission was $1.49 i.e. the same as a regular Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe.

Rather than a hamburger patty dusted with Montreal steakhouse seasoning, on my burger, they put the seasoning onto the garlic aioli, which was spread on the top bun. The hamburger patty itself was just plainly seasoned with salt. For junior hamburgers, Wendy's patties seem a little bigger and thicker than BK or McDonald's and tend to be moister. There's also a courser grind to them that I find more satisfying.

The seasoning was very heavy on the black pepper. It was to the point where it was hard to pick out the other spices and brought a slight twinge of heat. If you're going for a black pepper steak feel, here's the pepper for you.

The garlic aioli felt a bit muted against the shower of black pepper but added some creaminess and mustard-y tang. The seasoned butter spread didn't do much for me though.

The cheese held up well against the beef and sauce but didn't quite melt.

The vegetables were of good quality and freshness and the sliced onion, in particular, hit just the right balance.

The bun didn't appear to be toasted, which was a shame as it could have provided some extra texture.

Overall, for the most part, Wendy's Steakhouse Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe tastes a lot like its underlying base: the Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe, which in turn tastes like a standard cheeseburger. That being said, the peppery steakhouse seasoning punches up the burger quite a bit. It keeps it interesting and well out of the jaws of "more-of-the-same."
