Review: Hostess - Cherry Chocodile Twinkies

Hostess Cherry-Flavored Chocodile Twinkies feature the brand's signature golden spongecake filled with a cherry-flavored creme and dipped in a chocolaty coating.

A 13.02-oz box contains 9-individually-wrapped snack cakes and cost me $2.99.

Like the recently-reviewed Red Velvet Cupcakes, these are a Valentine's Day-themed item.

These Chocodiles sport a seriously thick coating. Usually with chocolaty-shelled cakes and/or donuts, the chocolaty coating is fairly thin and cracks or flakes off as you bite into them, but this was thicker than you get on some candy bars. It's flavored with cocoa rather than chocolate so you get more of a mild chocolaty quality rather than creaminess or richness. Still, it's a nice flavor and protects the cake from drying out really well.

With such a solid shell, the cake inside was decently moist and spongy without feeling oily.

The creme-filling actually contains some cherry juice and delivered a pretty enjoyable note of tangy, sweet cherry without feeling like cough syrup or veering into the overly-sweet territory of cherry cordial chocolates.

Overall, Hostess Cherry-Flavored Chocolate Twinkies hit the right notes for a tasty chocolate-cherry combination.
