Review: Popeyes - Spicy Truff Chicken Sandwich

Side view of Popeyes Spicy Truff Chicken Sandwich.

Popeyes Spicy Truff Chicken Sandwich features a crispy-fried chicken breast filet, Truff spicy mayo, and barrel-cured pickles on a buttery brioche bun. It's the same for their regular Chicken Sandwich but with Truff spicy mayo instead of regular mayo.

It cost me $6.49 for the sandwich.

The chicken filet on this occasion deserved a gold star for whoever made it. It was super thick, tender, and juicy (it looks a little dry in the pictures but it was not). I gave it a little squeeze and the juices ran down. Even though it didn't quite give full bun coverage on one side, it was thick enough that the bun cradled it like a hot dog. The crust was light in weight but flaky, crispy, and substantial in texture.

As far as the Truff spicy mayo goes, it was surprisingly not really spicy at all. I would say it's McChicken spicy (and not the Hot and Spicy version). There was just a slight kick to it that faded quickly. Other than that it was creamy and quite tangy with a hint of truffle throughout and a bit of a funky end note. Popeyes' regular Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a good deal hotter.

The bun was soft, squishy, and moist. It offered with a bit of buttery richness and a touch of sweetness, while the pickles were tangy and crunchy.

Cross-section of Popeyes Spicy Truff Chicken Sandwich.

Overall, the Popeyes Spicy Truff Chicken Sandwich was great on the chicken sandwich front but a bit of a miss for me in regards to the Truff spicy mayo. Ultimately, I think Popeyes should have gone the same route as Taco Bell with regular Truff hot sauce over Truff spicy mayo. The sandwich had enough richness between the fried batter and buttered bun to not need mayo and could have used a stronger dose of heat and truffle flavor.
