Review: Papa Johns - Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza

Papa Johns' Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza features a hand-tossed crust stuffed with a combination of mozzarella and garlic-herb ricotta. You can order it with any toppings.

The 1-topping Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza costs $14.99 near me, but I received this courtesy of Papa Johns. As with the rest of the chain's pizzas, a dipping cup of Garlic Special Sauce was included along with a lone pepperoncini.

Similar to the regular Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza, the Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza looked quite plump around the crust and sported a lightly floured surface at the edges. The cheese on top of the pizza was plentiful, as was the pepperoni.

Picking up the slice, I noted that it was soft all around, which isn't ideal for a pizza but has generally been my experience with hand-tossed pizzas from any of the Big Four pizza chains (Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa Johns, and Pizza Hut).

The cheese on top had a bit of a stretch to it and the sauce underneath wasn't too heavy or sweet (it was still sweet, just not overly so). The pepperoni added mild smoky, salty notes to go with a welcomed bit of crispness that was otherwise missing from the pizza.

The mozzarella inside the crust was nicely melted and abundant. The ricotta appeared as a thin, gooey melted sauce that sat atop the mozzarella. It didn't have any of the grainy texture that I normally associate with ricotta. What it did have was an extra note of salt as well as a slightly herby, garlicky flavor that gave the stuffed crust some oomph in the taste department.

Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza heated up well in the air fryer the next day. While I typically use a cast iron pan (affiliate disclosure - I may earn a commission if you buy something through this link) and a lid to heat up my leftover pizza, the air fryer does a better job melting the cheese inside of a stuffed crust while still crisping up the crust. The pizza was actually better the next day--the cheese was meltier and the crust was crispier without being dried out. In fact, if you're not a fan of soft crust, you might want to try heating up your slices on day one.

Overall, Papa Johns Cheesy Calzone Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza turned out quite well. There was a good amount of melted cheese all around to go with an enjoyable flavor in the stuffed crust. That being said, it didn't really feel like a calzone at all.
