Review: Real Good Foods - Steak Burrito Bowl

Real Good Foods Steak Burrito Bowl packaging.

Real Good Foods' Steak Burrito Bowl features seasoned beef strips with riced cauliflower, Monterey jack cheese, and black beans.

The 9-oz box cost me $2.99 on sale. The meal is geared toward keto diets as it lists 8g net carbs and 31g of protein prominently on the front of the box.

Everything in the whole bowl just ended up looking like little minced pieces, which reminded me more than a little of wet dog food.

There's a salsa to the bowl that was not mentioned on the front of the box and it provided a bulk of the flavor here. It's a pretty basic salsa of chile peppers and tomato with a bit of seasoning (salt, garlic powder, cumin, and onion powder, according to the ingredients). The sauce was mostly just spicy and tangy. It could have used more garlic, cumin, and onion powder.

Cheese was listed as the most abundant ingredient but didn't make much of an impact in taste or gooey texture. Monterey jack cheese is a fairly mild cheese but it also melts well so I was a bit disappointed in that aspect.

The meat was fairly abundant but was more like small shreds of beef rather than strips, which meant it didn't feel like steak at all. It seemed like it was just slow-cooked with salt rather than any braising broth as it felt fairly plain. There was a good amount of it throughout the bowl though.

The cauliflower served as a stand-in for the more carb-heavy rice here. It's harder than rice though but did give somewhat of a grainy feel I suppose.

The beans added a nice earthy quality that I could have used more of. They were relatively soft.

Overall, Real Good Foods, mostly felt like a spicy meat bowl. It was fairly filling but a little boring as the flavor lacked much variety. You can always add your own sauce and more cheese I suppose... The Real Good Foods brand also stands out for being remarkably transparent with its ingredients (i.e. nothing hidden behind "spices," "natural flavors," or the like).
