Review: Wendy's - Breakfast Burrito

Wendy's Breakfast Burrito next to a quarter.

Wendy's Breakfast Burrito features two fresh-cracked eggs, six oven-baked applewood-smoked bacon strips, seasoned breakfast potatoes, two American cheese slices, and Swiss cheese sauce (the same sauce that's used on the Sausage Egg & Swiss Croissant), wrapped up in a flour tortilla.

I bought one for $4.99. It's suppose to come with packets of Cholula hot sauce but they forgot to give me any.

They did not do a good job of folding my breakfast burrito. It was folded very loosely and popped open as I unwrapped it (although I did manage to get it to close for a picture). I ended up refolding it myself for a tighter, more secure wrap.

Wendy's Breakfast Burrito opened up.

The tortilla was a bit hard and lacked that bit of chewiness that you want. I would guess that my particular tortilla had gone a little stale but it retained enough moisture and pliability not to break.

The American cheese melted very nicely (as American cheese is wont to do) with a mild and creamy flavor that was buoyed by the Swiss cheese sauce. The cheese sauce added an extra layer of richness and a bit more on the flavor front.

The bacon was crispy and respectable with the expected meaty, smoky, and salty notes. The potatoes actually managed to hold on to some of their crispiness and contributed a welcomed garlic, onion, and peppery notes that aren't generally found in your typical breakfast burrito.

The eggs were firm but not rubbery and offered an occasional crispy edge. It's not bad but I prefer the fluffier, softer texture of scrambled eggs in general.

Cross-section of Wendy's Breakfast Burrito.

While I didn't get any Cholula hot sauce, I did have some leftover salsa from a local taqueria (taco shop) that added both heat and a fresh acidity that went well with the breakfast burrito.

Overall, Wendy's Breakfast Burrito turned out to be a pretty solid fast food breakfast burrito. The bacon and potatoes in particular stood out in both taste and texture, while the flour tortilla and folding job were not so great. While not an exceptional value, the price is competitive for similarly-sized breakfast burritos from other major fast food chains.
