Review: Jack in the Box - Black Pepper Cheeseburger

Jack in the Box's Black Pepper Cheeseburger features peppercorn mayo, two slices of black pepper cheese, onion rings, hickory-smoked bacon, and a beef patty on their signature bun.

It goes for $4.59 but I received this one courtesy of Jack in the Box.

They kept it fairly simple with the Black Pepper Cheeseburger but it worked out well. To start, between the cheese and the peppercorn mayo, there's a definite hint of black pepper to every bite; it's not enough to tingle but the flavor is there.

With the lack of wet ingredients beyond the mayo, the onion rings kept a good deal of crispiness. Inside, the onions were sweet, tender, and easily bitten through. Also crispy was the bacon which, while very thin, offered a nice smoky flavor.

The cheese was a creamy Monterey Jack with just the barest hint of black pepper.

The beef patty was lightly seasoned and fairly juicy. There was a nice char to it.

The bun delivered more of a premium, bread-like feel than your typical burger bun. There's a bit more softness and give to it along with a slight sweetness. It's pretty top notch.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Black Pepper Cheeseburger felt like a slight variation on a Western bacon cheeseburger. Being a fan of those type of burgers, it's no surprise that I enjoyed this well-executed rendition. It's also really nice if you're of the meat and cheese burger set, as both ingredients are highlighted.
