Review: Krispy Kreme - Hershey's Gold Donut

Krispy Kreme's Hershey's Gold Donut consists of an Original Glazed Donut topped with Hershey's Gold bar pieces and a drizzle of salted caramel icing.

They typically go for $1.29 but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

Between the sticky sweetness of the glaze, the salty sweetness of the caramel, and the creamy  sweetness of the candy, the Hershey's Gold Donut turned out to be a sugar overload for me.

The candy pieces came, fittingly enough, in small nuggets that delivered a lightly salty creaminess. Combined with the rest of the donut, I couldn't really taste the pretzel and peanut pieces that were occasionally embedded in the candy unless I picked off a piece and ate it alone. I ended up feeling that it might have been a better idea to mix in whole pieces of pretzels and peanuts in addition to the candy pieces.

The caramel echoed the salty and caramelized sweet notes of the Hershey's Gold. Add the glaze to this and it made for sweetness overkill, especially given the fact that Krispy Kreme yeast donuts are generally on the small side and, as such, don't provide as much of a buffer against sweeter components.

The donut itself was wonderfully soft, airy, and moist.

At the end of the day, the Hershey's Gold Donut was just too sweet for my liking. I would have preferred it without the signature glaze so that the caramelized creme, pretzel, and peanuts indicative of the Hershey's Gold bar would better stand out.
