Review: Jack in the Box - Southwest Monster Taco

Jack in the Box's Southwest Monster Taco is an extra-long taco shell filled with seasoned meat, shredded cheddar cheese, black beans, corn, grilled onions, and Southwest sauce.

I picked one up for $1.79

The corn and onions add texture and sweetness, while the beans lend a grounding earthiness. The Southwest sauce pulls it all together with a smoky creaminess and just a hint of heat. The cheese is nicely melted with a mild flavor.

On their own, the toppings seem balanced and fitting of the Southwest theme, but combined with the paste-like meat filling, which comes with its own similar seasoned flavor, the two feel less like they mesh and more like they compete for attention. The result is a weird combination that's not quite a classic crunchy taco nor a southwestern-style burrito.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Southwest Monster Taco turned out okay but is my least favorite version from the Monster Taco family. The taco meat just doesn't play well with the Southwest toppings, which would probably be more at home in Jack in the Box's Fajita Pita.
