Review: Taco Bell - A.M. Crunchwrap

Taco Bell's A.M. Crunchwrap is the new "cornerstone" to Taco Bell's First Meal breakfast menu. Upon first glance, it seems pretty typical: a slight variant on a breakfast burrito as a flour tortilla is folded into a hexagonal shape and pressed with a filling of scrambled eggs, your choice of bacon or sausage, cheese, and a hash brown for $2.49. But, it has its surprises.

It's a bit smaller than a Crunchwrap Supreme, but a bit thicker as well. It's just the right size to eat with one hand.

Lacking the crunchy tostada shell of its second-to-fourth meal counterpart, the A.M. Crunchwrap instead relies on pressed, thin, crispy tortilla sear that gives way to the soft warm layer of tortilla underneath. It's pretty satisfying.

I tried both the sausage (I neglected to take pictures of the sausage though) and the bacon, and came out preferring the bacon. It comes in crunchy, smoky little bits whereas the sausage is salty, under-seasoned, and fatty tasting.

All the ingredients were well-harmonized and no one ingredient overpowered the rest, from the gooey cheese, to the slightly-crispy hash brown, to the crispy bacon pieces.

Here's what made it really great though: while it wasn't listed anywhere in Taco Bell's description of the A.M. Crunchwrap, there was a smoky chipotle-like sauce in both bacon and sausage versions of the Crunchwrap that I tried. And. It. Was. Awesome! I don't know if it was there by design or by mistake, but it really set the A.M. Crunchwrap apart from other fast food breakfast offerings.

Two things really set the A.M. Crunchwrap above the common fast food breakfast: the crispy, even sear from the press and the smoky chipotle sauce that may or may not have supposed to have been there. But it was really good. Like writing-about-it-makes-me-want-one good (this does not happen often, and I've written a lot of reviews).

So yeah. If you're near one of the 815 or so Taco Bell locations serving First Meal, try it and let me know what you think. I need to know if I'm just imagining this awesome goodness (I hope not!) or I guess I can always just go eat another one.
