Review: Wendy's - Sunny Side Burger

Wendy's Sunny Side Burger is part of their current breakfast test and features a fresh-cracked egg, natural Asiago cheese, your choice of Applewood Smoked Bacon or all-natural sausage, Hollandaise sauce,  and a Jr. burger patty served on a toasted honey-wheat artisan ciabatta.

I went with bacon and the sandwich cost $2.79.

I'll start with the good stuff:

There were two things that struck me about this sandwich. First, look at this bacon:

So nice! Top notch example of bacon cookery no? The bacon was smoky, tasty and crunchy.

The second thing I noticed was real cheese! While most fast food chains go with good old American cheese, Wendy's sets themselves apart with real Asiago cheese with a fairly neutral creamy flavor.

The egg actually looks the same as an egg you cooked on a pan, although perhaps a little overcooked. There was a generous sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the egg, but it was not overwhelming or that noticeable really.

The burger patty got a little lost here. It added just the slightest of beef flavor, but didn't seem to have been seasoned at all. It actually tasted different than their regular menu patties due to the lack of seasoning. I'm not sure if this was unintentional or by design.

I can't say much about the Hollandaise sauce, I didn't really taste it at all.

My least favorite part of the Sunny Side Burger was actually the bun. While it looked like it received a decent toasting, like what occurs at a lot of fast food chains, it was soft all around and lacking that desirable crispy crust. It was also a little chewy. On the plus side, it had a pleasant, slightly sweet taste.

Overall, Wendy's Sunny Side Burger was a mixed bag for me. While there wasn't any glaring shortcomings, there were some little bits here and there that I didn't care for. That being said, the bacon was impressively done and the real cheese was a nice touch. That makes it okay in my book.
