Review: Sara Lee - Iced Pumpkin Cake

Sara Lee's Iced Pumpkin Cakes are seasonal snack-sized cakes made with actual pumpkin.

They come 6 cakes to a 10.5-oz box, which I bought for $2.50 on sale.

They keep it pretty simple with this one; there's a noticeable, mellow pumpkin flavor and just a bit of spice to them. It's a bit oily, but that's pretty standard with snack cakes since they're meant to keep for a few weeks, rather than a few days, without drying out. To keep it moist, you need either a layer of oils or fats (like chocolate) to form a barrier.

Beyond the oily factor, there's a bit of a stickiness to the cake similar to Twinkies and the like, where it can get stuck in your throat if you wolf them down too fast.

The frosting is sweet and surprisingly viscous rather than solid or caked on. It's pretty nice and lends a fresh feel to the cake. The sweetness of the frosting covers up some of the pumpkin taste though.

Overall, Sara Lee's Iced Pumpkin Cakes make for some convenient and enjoyable eats. It's nice for when you want some on-the-go baked pumpkin goodness (I'd choose pumpkin pie over it, though). I especially liked that the frosting didn't have a wax- or Play-Doh-like consistency.
