Review: Taco Bell - $1 Crunchwrap Sliders

Taco Bell's new $1 Crunchwrap Sliders are smaller versions of the Crunchwrap Supreme and feature the same distinctive hexagonal fold and grilled exterior. They come in three varieties: Beefy Cheddar, BLT, and Spicy Chicken.

I picked up one of each for $1 a piece and also got a Crunchwrap Supreme for size comparison while I was at it.

As you can see below, there's quite a bit of size difference between the Slider and the original (you can also see that my Crunchwrap Supreme was poorly folded with a gaping hole in the center). Interesting, the Fritos chips of the Sliders stay crunchy better than the tostada shell of the Crunchwrap Supreme.

The grilling adds a nice crisp surface to the tortilla, but some of the corners can be a little bare filling-wise.

The Beefy Cheddar comes filled with seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, and Fritos corn chips. It's a pretty standard Taco Bell combination that's come in various shapes and packages in the past (and I'm sure in the future as well). The chips offer a distinctive corn flavor as well as a nice crunch. The combination works well but isn't terribly exciting for the Taco Bell regulars.

The BLT calls upon Taco Bell's crumbled bacon, which is normally only available for morning duty (but has been offered in the past in other items way before Taco Bell ever served breakfast). It also features lettuce, tomatoes, Avocado Ranch sauce, and Fritos corn chips. Unfortunately, the bacon is neither crunchy nor powerful enough to stand against the Fritos chips. I ended up tasting mostly lettuce, chips, and the occasional cool buttery tanginess of the avocado ranch plus a just a hint of bacon and tomato.

The Spicy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider is filled with seasoned shredded white meat chicken, creamy Chipotle sauce, and Fritos corn chips. It actually reminds me somewhat of the chili Taco Bell offered for a limited time earlier this year, but with a much more cohesive texture. The seasoned chicken is a little mushy but combines nicely with the chipotle sauce. The chipotle sauce delivers a brief tingle of heat where encountered but is still fairly mild.

Overall, Taco Bell's new $1 Crunchwrap Sliders are good but can be a little bit too salty with the inclusion Fritos Chips. Of the three, I liked the Spicy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider the most, followed by the Beefy Cheddar, and then the BLT. The Spicy Chicken's chipotle sauce works really well with the chicken and Fritos, while the Beefy Cheddar was too similar to the Beefy Fritos Burrito, and the BLT combination didn't quite stand up to the Fritos chips. Other than that, it's very easy on the wallet, especially if you're a light eater.
