Review: Wienerschnitzel - Pretzel Bun Chili Dog

I've tried Wienerschnitzel's Chili Dog before, but not on a pretzel bun so on a recent stop at a Wienerschnitzel, I tried the Pretzel Bun Chili Dog.

The Pretzel Bun Chili Dog is simple enough: a pretzel hot dog bun, a turkey hot dog, and Wienerschnitzel's trademark chili. There's an upcharge of 40 cents for the pretzel bun so that my Pretzel Bun Chili Dog cost $1.89.

I mostly liked the pretzel bun with its soft, dense texture and pretzel flavor. I thought it held up better against the salt from the hot dog and the chili than a regular hot dog bun. It was slightly stale on this occasion though.

The chili is thin with bits of ground up meat. I could taste some underlying, varied spices and nuances, but it was overwhelmed by a lot of salt. I think the chili would taste a lot better if they halved the salt content.

The hot dog itself was decent and pretty standard.

Overall, I liked Wienerschnitzel's Pretzel Bun Chili Dog better than their regular chili dog, but I'm still not a fan of the super salty chili.

  2. Agree with the salty chili. Hot dogs have more than enough salt on its own and then to add salty chili, it becomes hard to scarf down more than 2 dogs without feeling sick afterward.

  3. I'm telling ya - get the bacon wrapped street dog with a pretzel bun next time. Oh, and add cheese to it. You won't be sorry.

  4. I've never been a big Wienerschnitzel fan. Most of their menu is considerably overpriced and their 'pastrami' is downright harrowing. Unless they have their 5 for $5 special going with chili dogs and chili burgers, I'm not interested. I did enjoy their pretzel bun years back, however.

Can someone try and explain why other, larger (read: McDonald's and Burger King) fast food companies don't jump into the hot dog pool? Terrible wording aside, the profit margin on hot dogs has to be incredible. Why not take advantage of it? People like hot dogs and Wienerschnitzel is apparently proving we don't have to have dollar beers to go along with them to scarf them down.
