Frozen Friday: Ben & Jerry's - Pistachio Pistachio Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio features pistachio ice cream with lightly roasted pistachios.

A pint was $3 on sale.

This is probably among Ben & Jerry's plainer flavors since is basically just pistachio ice cream.

The ice cream itself only delivered a light, nutty pistachio flavor paired with the standard creamy, dense texture of Ben & Jerry's. Pistachio fans might find it too light on the pistachio. It's like sweet cream with a definite hint of pistachio.

It's left then to the roasted pistachios to carry the day and they do an admirable job. The pistachio are mostly half or quarter pieces rather than chopped and are plentiful for that signature Ben & Jerry's chunkiness. They're a little soft though with the barest murmur of a crunch. Pistachios are one of the softer nuts but I think the moisture of ice cream made these softer still (it probably varies with how well the ice cream is kept and how fresh it is though).

Overall, Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio is among the more contrasting pistachio ice cream flavors with sizable gap between the strength of the flavor between the nuts and the ice cream. Try it if you prefer big pieces of pistachios in ice cream rather than a strong-flavored pistachio ice cream.

  1. This is probably my favorite pistachio ice creams for that reason -- it's pretty generous with the pistachios. And it's nice not to see the bright green ice cream that's artificially colored like other pistachio ice creams.

  2. One of the few times I've been disappointed with a Ben & Jerry's pint. Blue Bell Pistachio Almond puts this to shame for a fraction of the price.

  3. I reckon the people who dislike this ice cream, but who also claim to enjoy pistachio ice cream, are people who have forgotten what actual pistachios taste like. They're not strongly flavored things, pistachios. For once, here's an ice cream without the artificial bulk-up of so many products, particularly dessert products, where the fake flavoring so in-your-face that it's nothing like the real thing. I'm not even a big fan of Ben & Jerry's. I think they're better than most store brands, but that's about it. This ice cream, though, is really good.
