Review: Trader Joe's Spicy Peanutty Noodle Bowl with Chicken

Trader Joe's Spicy Peanutty Noodle Bowl with Chicken packaging.

Trader Joe's Spicy Peanutty Noodle Bowl with Chicken features "Asian style noodles with vegetables, ground chicken, and spicy peanut sauce." According to the Trader Joe's website, it's inspired by Chinese dan dan noodles (AKA dan dan mien).

It was $3.49 for a 10.8-oz bowl.

The vegetables include bok choy, onions, and carrots. They were largely flavorless and mostly there for texture. Usually bok choy comes in whole leaves and stems but they were chopped pretty finely here.

The noodles had structure but also a slight gumminess that was slightly weird. They didn't hold the sauce very well and ended up with a bit of a watery sheen to them (which suggests a lack of starch). As a result, they ended up tasting very plain.

The chicken is meant to be ground chicken bits but I did notice a chunk here and there.

The sauce was fairly complex with a peanut butter and soy sauce base with spices, a mild heat, and a just a bit of mala or numbing quality. The sauce was also quite sweet; probably overly so for dan dan noodles. Because of the peanut quality and level of sweetness, I had wondered if it was meant to be a Thai dish before I looked it up on the Trader Joe's website.

Overall, Trader Joe's Spicy Peanutty Noodle Bowl with Chicken was fine for a peanutty, Asian-style noodle dish but I wouldn't get it if I was craving some dan dan noodles as it's too sweet and felt like it was missing something (maybe a tangy component?).
