Frozen Friday: Lyfe Kitchen - Chicken Chili Verde

Lyfe Kitchen's Chicken Chili Verde frozen meal features roasted, seasoned white meat chicken in a spicy green chili sauce with polenta and black beans on the side.

I picked up a 10-ounce box for $2.50 on sale.

The meal cooks in a steam bag and the instructions prompt you to slide it out gently onto a plate. It seems easier enough to make a mess out of if you just dump it out but I managed to get it on the plate decently.

The chicken was a bit chewy and dry (possibly the fault of my overpowered microwave but I've had other frozen chicken meals turn out excellently) but had a nice enough flavor. The verde sauce was a bit too tangy for me (but fairly normal for a verde sauce) and pretty spicy.  There's a little bit of cheese in there somewhere that cools the heat and smooths the tang just a touch.

The beans were my favorite part of the meal with an enjoyable smoky earthiness and a bit of tomato for nuance. I didn't really get much of a sense of the cheese on the product box (maybe it slid over to the chicken).

The polenta was moist to the point of sogginess and was mostly plain and a little spongy. It offered the standard corn flavor and not much else. Still, it served as a buffer to the stronger flavors of the chicken.

Overall, Lyfe Kitchen's Chicken Chili Verde was decent enough but didn't quite hit the right notes for me. Beyond the beans, I didn't enjoy it so much.
