Review: Jack in the Box: New French Fries

Jack in the Box's new fries side view
So after one failed attempt, I managed to try Jack in the Box's new crispier French Fries.  As you can see, they look very McDonald's-like so I decided to get an order of McDonald's fries to compare.

While they look very McDonald's-like, Jack in the Box's new Fries don't taste very McDonald's-like.  They're more like Burger King fries in taste and texture.
McDonald's Fries for comparison
A reason for the similarity is that Jack's Fries are battered with rice flour and potato starch which means they should be consistently more crisper and crunchier than McDonald's fries but they lack the McDonald's beef flavor which is where the magic happens.  Part of the reason for the change is that the new fries cook faster and how heat longer.
McDonald's versus Jack in the Box's fries
Can you tell which one is McDonald's and which is Jack's?  Only the little granules of batter give it away.  They taste like they've been blanched in salt water or soaked in salt water before cooking.  There's a salt flavor throughout the fry but it lacked a strong potato flavor.  They do taste better than the last order of Jack in the Box's now-discontinued Natural Cut Fries that I had though.  Same price though: small, medium, and large sizes for: $1.39, $1.79, and $1.99 respectively.

  3. They aren't anything special, but they're much better than the old natural cut fries, or BK's fries. I've had these twice: once at JitB, and once when I got them to go. By the time I got home, about seven minutes later, they were completely limp. So it's best to eat them right away.
