Review: Subway - Birthday Berry Cookies

Subway's Birthday Berry Cookies are a limited-time item they're serving up this month to celebrate their birthday (notwithstanding the fact that they were founded in August). Each cookie has dried cranberries, dried blueberries, and white chocolate chips baked in.

I picked up two recently so I could heat one in the toaster oven to compare. My local Subway had them for 60 cents each or three for $1.25.

Subway's cookies remind me a lot of McDonald's, but offer a little bit more variety. They're not too different from packaged cookie dough you buy from the supermarket and bake at home.

My Birthday Berry Cookies were hardened a bit to a crust on the outside, while retaining a little softness and pliability on the inside. Toasting one, gave it a fresh-baked smell and softness. I definitely recommend toasting when you can. I believe you can ask them to toast it for you in-store as well.

Taste-wise, the crumb had a brown sugar caramelized flavor while the dried berries and white chocolate add a spike of sweetness. The dried berries in particular added more of a general berriness rather than strong notes of blueberry and cranberry. I think nuts instead of white chocolate would fit more with Subway's healthier-for-you image and help level out the cookie's sweetness.

Overall, Subway's Birthday Berry Cookies were good as far as fast food cookies go. It's not my preference, but I can see people getting them for variety (or novelty) or a nice hit of berry flavor.
