Frozen Friday: Ben & Jerry's - Boston Cream Pie Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's Boston Cream Pie ice cream features Boston cream pie ice cream with yellow cake pieces, fudge flakes, and swirls of pastry cream.

A pint was $4.29.

I think I've had more Boston cream donuts than I've had slices of Boston cream pie but Ben & Jerry's ice cream version is pretty much the pie in ice cream form.

The Boston cream pie ice cream is rich and creamy with a light vanilla flavor and an eggy undertone. It's a little like French vanilla ice cream but not as vanilla-y.

The yellow cake pieces are wonderfully fluffy and soft, especially for cake mixed into ice cream. Ben and Jerry's seem to have mastered putting cake into ice cream without it becoming frozen and dense or soggy.

The fudge flakes were the weakest portion of the ice cream. I imagine they were added so there would be some chunkiness to the ice cream but a rich fudgy ribbon would have better suited the Boston cream pie theme. The flakes add chocolate to the occasional bite but it's hit or miss and chocolate is too integral to a Boston cream pie for that.

While there's not fudgy ribbon, there is a liquid ribbon of yellow pastry cream that repeats the eggy notes of the ice cream for a custard feel.

Overall, Ben & Jerry's Boston Cream Pie does a very good job at capturing most of the essence of the Boston cream pie and makes for some good eating. I just wish there was more chocolate to it.
