Review: Firehouse Subs - Hook & Ladder Light Sandwich

Firehouse Subs’ Hook & Ladder Light features hot smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, deli mustard, and light mayo on a light wheat roll.

I purchased one for $5.49.

The Hook & Ladder is one of Firehouse’s signature sandwiches so naturally they offer a variant of it on their “Under 500” (calories) menu. Firstly, I wasn't expecting the sub to be so small. That being said, I did appreciate the portions of warm ham and turkey given on the light roll. I just wished both of them had a little more flavor.

Honestly, the whole sandwich really lacked any strong taste, good or bad. The Monterey Jack was practically a no show. However, the tomatoes did have a nice pop to them. The lettuce was crisp and the onions were firm but nothing on the sub made me excited for the next bite. My favorite thing about it may have been the wheat roll and even that could have used some butter to take it up a notch.

Overall, I don’t think the Hook & Ladder Light is a bad sub but it wasn't worth it for me. If you’re looking to cut calories, I'd maybe try one of the more adventurous subs on the “Under 500” menu or just ditch the mayo on a regular sandwich.
