Frozen Friday: Marie Callender's - Home-Style Boneless Pork

Marie Callender's Home-Style Boneless Pork frozen meal features two pork rib-shaped patties in barbecue sauce plus cheddar topped mashed potatoes and corn.

A 14.4-oz box was $2 on sale.

The pork patties reminded me very much of the patty inside of a McRib sandwich. The have the same shape and were roughly the same size. In texture, they exhibited a slight chewiness and were more hearty than tender. The flavor was a nice porkiness mixed with the sweet, smoky tang of the barbecue sauce.

The cheddar-topped mashed potatoes didn't fare as well. They were smooth but kind of gummy. The flavor of the potatoes themselves was standard but they sat alongside the pork patties and barbecue sauce in the same compartment. The potatoes and the barbecue sauce didn't go well together and I couldn't really make out the cheese over the sauce.

The corn turned out really well. It was plump and full of flavor, which is more the norm in frozen food these days. I remember as a kid that microwaved frozen corn tended to be dried out, so they've definitely improved frozen corn in general.

Overall, Marie Callender's Home-Style Boneless Pork frozen meal was pretty good for the pork patties and the corn, but the potatoes were sub-par and suffered from the barbecue sauce. Sliced or diced potatoes might do better here (as would having the potatoes in a separate compartment). If you find yourself missing McDonald's McRib, you can easily put on of the patties inside of a roll for a reasonable substitute.
