Review: Taco Bell - Mango BBQ Chickstar

Taco Bell's Mango BBQ Chickstar features tortilla-crusted crispy chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, 3-cheese blend, and new Mango BBQ sauce folded and grilled inside a flour tortilla into a hexagon.

I bought one for $4.29.

This was a little bit like Taco Bell's answer to a crispy chicken sandwich. There were two strips of crispy chicken inside and, while they were lightly seasoned, spicy, and reasonably crispy for steaming inside of the tortilla, the coverage was a little spotty. They shifted a bit inside the tortilla, which led to some meatless bites. It might be better if had they sliced up the chicken or folded a tighter package.

The sauce offered the standard sweet, tangy, and smoky barbecue blend but with a hint of fruitiness that didn't quite say "mango" to me but I'm guessing is meant to denote such. It's a nice enough flavor but there was just way too much sauce inside my Chickstar.

There's not too much flavor to the lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese and all of it seemed to be covered up by Mango BBQ sauce. Given the barbecue sauce, I felt like some onions, fried or otherwise, might have done better.

Overall, Taco Bell's Mango BBQ Chickstar makes for an okay vehicle for their new crispy chicken strips but suffered a bit in the execution for me. I'd probably enjoy it fine with a lot less sauce but I wouldn't choose it over a regular Crunchwrap Supreme or just getting the chicken strips alone (if that was ever offered).
