Review: Burger King - Tropical Mango Smoothie

Burger King's new BK Tropical Mango Smoothie is Burger King's take on McDonald's Mango Pineapple. The name might be slightly different, but the flavor comes from a mango-pineapple pre-mix blended with ice, and low-fat vanilla yogurt.

The regular price of a 12-ounce cup is $2.49 at my local Burger King, but I went during the $1 Memorial Day promotion and paid $1 for this one.

For Memorial Day weekend, the smoothies and frappes at my local Burger King were pre-blended (instead of the normal blend-to-order) and stored in very large plastic pitchers to be poured quickly when ordered. The even consistency had a more liquid mouth feel as a result. It was pretty easy to drink, but I think to imagine something a bit thicker for a smoothie.

While McDonald's version lists pineapple concentrate and mango puree concentrate as the #2 and #3 ingredients to their Mango Pineapple Smoothie base (after water), Burger King lists sugar syrup and grape juice concentrate for the same. Mango puree concentrate is #6 and concentrated pineapple is #7. Basically, BK's version is plenty of sweet, with a bunch of different juices to ape that mango flavor. Interestingly though, Burger King's version has less sugar per 12 ounces (41g versus 49g).

I did get a taste of grape juice, but a mix of various fruits juices plus artificial and natural flavors had Burger King's Tropical Mango shake exhibiting a sweet, icy, tart mango flavor that's likely to please. It's more like a ice-blended fruit drink than a fruit and yogurt smoothie though (it didn't have the same lassi-like quality of McDonald's version). Like most fast food smoothies, a lot on the sweet side and not really healthy, but still quite enjoyable, especially on a hot day.
