I bought one for $1.99.
The Mexican S'mores is about the same size as El Pollo Loco's Stuffed Quesadilla, which is a pretty good size and plenty for two. Mine was missing the powdered sugar but there was plenty of sweetness to be found inside.
All your classic s'mores ingredients are here and in fair abundance. There's squishy marshmallows, plenty of melted milk chocolate, and broken pieces of graham cracker to deliver on the familiar campfire flavor. Now that I think about it, they could probably flame-grill these to really give you that campfire flavor, but they press them instead.
The grill press added just a touch of crispness to the tortilla's outer layer. The chocolate tortilla has a light cocoa flavor and does a good job of keeping the fingers clean if you're careful. The filing does ooze out here and there, but some quick maneuvering should keep it neat.
On the downside, there's a bit too much tortilla as you might notice from the pictures. The way it's folded leaves about 6 layers of tortilla to bite through to get to the good stuff. Maybe, they should have gone for a s'mores burrito... I also wish there were more graham crackers for both crunch and flavor; there was a lot of chocolate and marshmallow though.
Overall, I liked El Pollo Loco's Mexican S'mores. Especially for the melted chocolate (not chocolate sauce, not chocolaty syrup, but just chocolate) and marshmallows. It really delivers on the whole s'mores concept (minus the fire) without making much of a mess. If there's too much tortilla, you can also just tear it off.

I'll have to try it sometime but there aren't any near me. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI can speak first hand that the "Gold Level" status isn't worth much. So you are basically just paying for a $50 chunk of aluminum. The old Gold program was much better as you got a per drink discount and a free drink occasionally. I think mathematically it is a better deal with the changes, but it's easier for me to pay $4.10 for a latte than $5.35.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the idea of a chocolate tortilla. I do like the idea of a smores burrito, though.
ReplyDeleteI would make love to this.
ReplyDeletewe need this in ohio!
ReplyDeleteBased off the incredible profit eBay sellers have made from the stainless steel cards (and now this), I decided to try and jump on the eBay bandwagon here.
ReplyDeleteTried.
They sold out in less than 30 seconds, when my computer froze -.-
Boo.
I'm having one right now and am in ecstasy ;)
ReplyDelete@_@ DO WANT
ReplyDeleteThe only time I've been to El Pollo Loco was to get those Chocolate Nachos, and it looks like my second time will be for this.
ReplyDeleteI tried it. It sucked. It didn't have chocolate inside. All the fast food joints in NW San Antonio suck actually.
