Review: Red Velvet Chips Ahoy Cookies

Nabisco's Red Velvet Chips Ahoy cookies feature soft red velvet cookies embedded with cream cheese-flavored chips and filled with creme.

A 9.6-oz package cost me $2.50.

These offer the familiar moist softness and small form factor of your standard chocolate chip Chips Ahoy cookie, but with a definite, more chocolaty aroma and flavor. Combined with the sweet and creamy cheese cake notes from the chips, they do taste a lot like delicious red velvet cake in cookie form. But like red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, these can be quite sweet and overly so for some.

The creme inside look to be the same vanilla-flavored stuff you find between the two wafers of a regular Oreo (or Oreo Creme Filled Chips Ahoy). The paste-like texture stands out in contrast to the smoother, melty quality of the chips.

Overall, Red Velvet Chips Ahoy are pretty tasty and hit the right red velvet notes for me (I like them better than the similarly-flavored Oreos). They can be addictive if you're not careful. The creme filling is an ill-fit that seems unnecessary given the similar profile provided by the cream cheese-flavored chips.
