Frozen Friday: Carl's Jr. - Ding Dong Ice Cream Sandwich

Carl's Jr.'s Ding Dong Ice Cream Sandwich features a halved Hostess Ding Dong snack cake filled with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I bought one for $1.89.

This worked a lot better than the Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich they offered a while back.

The scoop of ice cream was actually a little wider than the diameter of the Ding Dong, which is understandable since a Ding Dong is fairly small (it is a snack cake, after all). I'm sure this varies from location to location, but my local Carl's Jr. holds the ice cream at a really low temp so that it's fairly hard and non-pliable. It's nice if you're driving off with one but not so nice if you want to eat it there and then. The Ding Dong was nice and soft though.

There's a good amount of chocolaty notes here between the waxy chocolate-flavored coating and the cake. It went well with the creamy vanilla of the ice cream. The cake made for a pretty good substitute for the chocolate wafers of a typical ice cream sandwich.

The cream filling added a softer texture and whipped cream touch to the ice cream. It also made everything very sweet.

Overall, Carl's Jr.'s Ding Dong Ice Cream Sandwich was pretty good, especially if you're already a fan of Ding Dongs, which are sometimes hard to find on shelves these days. That being said, you can probably make a better version at home with very little effort. If you can't find a Ding Dong, a Hostess CupCake would probably make a fine stand-in.
