Frozen Friday: Healthy Choice - Barbecued Seasoned Steak with Red Potatoes

Healthy Choice's Barbecued Seasoned Steak with Red Potatoes is a Top Chef-inspired frozen entree that cooks in a microwavable steam basket. It consists of beef with red potatoes, corn, red and green bell peppers, and onions and uncured bacon in a whiskey barbecue sauce.

These are normally around $4.29 and about $2 to $3 on sale.

There's not too much to this meal in terms of quantity: you get a little bit of meat, a little bit of potatoes, and a little bit of corn and peppers. I didn't really notice the bacon, I think it was mixed into the barbecue sauce to add some smokiness.

The beef and potatoes turned out okay. The beef was a little dry and the potatoes were soft. Steak never fares well in the microwave. Mixed into the barbecue sauce they were fine. I would have liked it better if the potatoes were seasoned and the barbecue sauce was meant for the steak only.

The corn was of pretty good quality, but the peppers were a little overcooked and I didn't notice the flavor of them much.

I didn't detect any hints of whiskey in the sauce, but it was a tasty blend of tangy, honey-sweet, and spicy  that managed to stay balanced and didn't overpower the other ingredients.

Overall, Healthy Choice's Barbecue Seasoned Steak was a pretty ho-hum affair. If there were no highs, there were no notable lows either. It was pleasant.

  1. After eating the vittles how about showing us how to make a Xmas ornament using the now-empty bowl device?

  2. Steak in a low fat microwave meal is nice change from chicken though.

  3. Yeah, that's true. But chicken frozen dinners tend to turn out better in the microwave.
