Review: Trader Joe's - Jelly Donut Muffins

Trader Joe's Jelly Donut Muffins (i.e. Trader Joe's take on the "duffin") purport to look like muffins but taste like donuts. They feature a raspberry jam filling down the center.

A 12-ounce box of four was $3.69.

I'm guessing the folks at Trader Joe's were meaning to imitate a cake donut (actually looking at the ingredients, it looks like they were going for a buttermilk donut), but it feels like they went overboard on the density. The smallish muffin had a considerable heft to it. So much so that the words "hockey puck" came to mind rather than "donut." Besides being really dense, they were also really dry.

I tried both microwaving one and reheating one in the oven, but that just made it warm but not any fluffier. It's possible I got a bad batch, but I'm not sure I want to buy another to find out (it anyone had a different experience, let me know below!).

On the other hand, it does taste like a plain cake donut with a little bit of cinnamon and sugar on top and the raspberry jam filling was top notch. It wasn't too sweet and delivered the full flavor of the fruit.

Overall, Trader Joe's Jelly Donut Muffin is a miss for me, unless you just want to scoop out and eat the jam. The overall taste is fine but the texture makes them feel like someone's failed baking class project.
