Preview / Review: Post - Poppin' Pebbles Cereal

Post is trying something new with their Fruity Pebbles brand of cereal by adding "poppin' pieces" to it and calling it "Poppin' Pebbles," which basically sounds like Fruity Pebbles plus Pop Rocks.

They won't be available in stores until January but I was sent a box to try them out.

If you've never tried Fruity Pebbles, they're like flatter, berry-flavored Rice Crispies, so they already have a little bit of popping going on. With the flatter shape, they tend to go soggy slightly faster than Rice Krispies. The berry flavor is like Trix but without the other fruits.

The fizz is provided by little green cereal balls which provide more of a crunch and a stronger berry flavor over the rice cereal. Unlike most spherical cereals like Cocoa Puffs and Kix, they have a smooth surface (to help hold in the carbon dioxide that provides the fizz I'm guessing).

Unlike Pop Rocks, where all you're eating is bits of fizzy candy, the "Poppin'" green cereal balls come in lesser numbers with only one or two in every spoonful. It's enough for a lesser fizz but it's definitely there. Those with sensitive throats might want to be careful with swallowing them as you might feel it going down.

Overall, Poppin' Pebbles make for some nice cereal eats if you prefer more fruity kid's cereals. They certainly add some novelty to the category and are pretty interesting and fun to eat, offering an apparent but lesser amount of pop than Pop Rocks.
