Review: Jersey Mike's - Famous Steak Philly

Jersey Mike's Famous Steak Philly is a classic-style cheesesteak with sliced steak, grilled onions and peppers.

The price is $7.75 for a 7-inch regular sub. You can also get it with chicken instead of steak.

The roll Jersey Mike's uses for the Steak Philly feels different than they're regular bread. As I picked it up, I thought it felt like an Amoroso roll. Yes, the same Amoroso that many a cheesesteak shop has shipped from Philly for that authentic cheesesteak roll. It could be my mind playing tricks on me, but it had the same softness and slight chew with a dusting of corn meal. I'm pretty sure Jersey Mike's bakes their own bread though. But yes, it was just the right roll for a cheesesteak.

Inside the steak was tender, but cut a little too thick for my liking and just a little over-seasoned. A thinner cut would lend a better texture and satisfying chew. The peppers and onions imparted quite a bit of flavor (perhaps a little too much with the peppers) and were coated with a liquidly splash of melted white American cheese.

For a cheesesteak, I didn't feel the Famous Steak Philly was cheesy enough. I wanted cheese that oozed and stretched just a little. The cheese in the sandwich was more a liquidfied sauce than the creamy layer of flavor I was looking for.

All-in-all, Jersey Mike's Famous Steak Philly turned out to be less than the sum of its parts for me, while the ingredients were well-prepared and high quality, it didn't come together quite right for me. Their Italian and Roast Beef cold subs work a lot better in my opinion.

  1. The corn meal on the roll is a give away. We've eaten more than our share of steak sandwiches on Amoroso rolls and although it looks like one I would be really surprised if it was. That's about where the likeness to a Philly Steak ends. We slice it really thin, with wiz or provolone and onions. I've never gone anywhere were a Philly steak automatically came with red and green pepper. I've seen sweet or hot that you can add yourself but nothing like this. I don't know why everywhere outside of Philly and our suburbs can't just make a really Philly steak. It's not rocket science and ours is the best for a reason.

  2. Personally I would prefer an infamous rather than a mere famous sandwich.
