Review: Nabisco - Watermelon Oreo Cookies

To welcome in the summer, Nabisco recently introduced new, limited-edition Watermelon Oreo cookies exclusively at Target. The cookies feature a watermelon-flavored creme filling, colored pink and green, sandwiched between two Golden Oreo wafers.

A 15.25-ounce package costs $2.99.

It would have been really interesting to sit in on the meeting where they came up with Watermelon Oreos. I figured it went something like this:

"Hey, summer's coming up. Let's make Watermelon Oreos!"

"Sure, why not?"

It's really a testament to the popularity of the Oreo cookie (the #1 cookie in the US), that Nabisco can make super random flavors seemingly on a whim.
That being said, Golden Oreo are basically vanilla cookies and the combination of vanilla and watermelon is probably not one that comes up in conversation... ever.

The creme filling has that familiar watermelon flavor you might find in a Jolly Rancher or bubble gum. The taste strikes a good balance where I could definitely identify it as watermelon-flavored, but not so much that it overwhelmed the creme or the cookie. Still, the combination of vanilla cookie and watermelon creme is weird and doesn't really go together.

Overall, Nabisco's Watermelon Oreo cookies were better than I expected and are decent, but not great. The pairing of vanilla and watermelon doesn't work, but I still found the cookie pleasantly edible.
