Review: Yoplait - Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt

Yoplait's Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt isn't technically Greek or even yogurt according to a lawsuit. Regardless, it's non-fat and features twice the protein of regular yogurt coupled with the flavor of honey and vanilla.

Oddly, one of my local supermarkets sells a 6-ounce cup for $1.49 while a similar-sized cup of traditionally made Greek yogurt (which sounds like it would cost more) which it sells for $1.29.

As I mentioned before, the big thing here seems to be the prominent "2X Protein of regular yogurt" on the package and "0% fat" which pretty much sums up the benefits of Greek yogurt over the regular stuff. Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar, although Yoplait's version has more than some other brands of Greek yogurt.

There doesn't actually seem to be any honey or vanilla in the yogurt as the package states "flavored with other natural flavors" and neither "honey" nor "vanilla" appear in the ingredients.

Whereas, traditional Greek yogurt is made by straining the whey from yogurt, Yoplait's version relies instead on gelatin (kosher for you vegetarians) and corn starch as thickening agents, and milk protein concentrate for that protein boost. Similar products from the more authentically made brands like Fage and Chobani feature a very short list of ingredients; just skim milk and live and active yogurt cultures. Also, they actually contain honey for their honey-flavored versions.

Yoplait's Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt is creamy without the fat. It's lightly sweet with a pleasant vanilla flavor. It's thicker than standard yogurt, but doesn't have the same density or texture as Fage or Chobani brand Greek yogurt; it's smoother.

I have to say, I like the taste of Yoplait's Greek Yogurt though. It goes down easy and is pretty darn good. I could see myself eating this quite a bit.
