Review: McDonald's - Strawberry and Creme Pie

McDonald's Strawberry and Creme Pie is a new, limited-time variation of their baked pies and looks a bit different from the standard Apple Pie, instead of having several width-wise opening, it has a long, lengthwise one displaying the border between the strawberry and creme filling that's the pie's most distinguishing feature.

McDonald's is promoting it with the Strawberry Shake (not new), to welcome the Spring I think.

I picked a warm one up at my local McDonald's for 89 cents.

The crust had the same crispy, slightly flaky texture of McDonald's baked pies but also had a baked-on sprinkling of sugar that gave the crust an extra bit of sweetness (but not as sweet as the sugar cookie crust of the Holiday Pie).

Inside the strawberry was mostly like a jam. Not exactly the taste of fresh strawberries, it was a little bit artificial tasting (like strawberry syrup) and gave an even, consistent mouth-feel. I could see the occasional bits of strawberries and strawberry seeds but didn't really notice them in my mouth. Still, I like strawberry, artificial or not.

The creme filling was a very soft, lightly-sweetened, cream-cheese-like experience. It muted the stronger, sweeter notes of the strawberry and struck a good balance with the strawberry side.

I thought McDonald's Strawberry and Creme Pie was pretty good and novel to boot. Strawberry and Creme isn't a taste I've found in my fast food eating and the combination of tart and creamy plus soft and crispy is quite enjoyable. Plus it's cheap!

I'd get it again if I were at McDonald's and had a hankering for a warm dessert. I'd definitely get it over the Apple Pie and the Cinnamon Melt.

  1. Looks really good. Hopefully better than those cream cheese bites Arby's tried a year ago.

  2. Work @ McDonald's, they are to DIE for!  When they come out of the oven by the dozen, the whole back the restaurant smells so damn good.  I always get one on my way home, they're best piping hot.

my concern is that many things that are colored red in food are now being made with carmine in them, which is crushed beetle shells..i'm a vegetarian so I do not want to eat anything with carmine that uses carmine to color the food.It is in most fruit cocktail to color the cherries brighter red. YUCK !!!!

  11. Don't really understand the whole vegetarian thing.  Plants are made of cells that are equally alive as the ones in animals.
Hint:  It's McDonald's, so chances are they used the most unnatural things to begin with...who cares though it tastes good once in a while.

Hint: Plants do not have the same capacity for suffering that animals have.

  17. I just tried this for the first time... I didn't think I would like it (mostly because so many have compared it to cheesecake, which I hate), but I have to admit that it was pretty good.  Still, I preferred the strawberry pies that McDonald's offered last summer (with the strawberry filling only, no "creme").

  18.  I don't know for sure, but I would be surprised if there was any carmine, as no other items on the McDonald's menu contain it.

  19.  Please, please keep these delicious pies on your menu! I am a cancer patient and food does not have the same appeal to me now. However, this little pie is so scrumptious, I eat two at one sitting sometimes! I love it and so does my husband because he is always trying to tempt me with different foods to keep my weight up. Thanks again! Please keep the pie!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. I absolutely love these pies. Unfortunately today I went to get one and was informed that it was just a "limited time item". So freaking mad! Get rid of all the other nonsense on the menu such as those fish bites, gross apple pies, fake ice cream and keep something that's worth going to McDonald's at midnight for! Please and Thank you.....

Today May 8, 2012 is a SAD Day for me......I couldn't get my Strawberry Fix!!  McDonald's no longer carries this delictable moist anytime treat :(

  29. Don't take this the wrong way, but I thought I was the only loser who felt this way.  I had my heart broken today, May 14th, 2012.  I drove to the McDonald's near my job for breakfast and they said the truck hadn't come in.  I went BACK during my lunch break and they said they still didn't have any.  I drove to ANOTHER location and they informed me that the pie was only a limited time item.  I called corporate and told them exactly how dissapointed I was.  I am not giving up hope of finding a pie at another location.  Hopefully they will bring this item back!  I won't give up hope! LOL!!!

  30. Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it was limited-time only. You can expected a lot more limited-time-only items at McDonald's moving forward as it's their current sales strategy. S'mores Pie is coming though!

  31. It's always nice when 2 losers meet in the comments of a fast food blog.

I'm kidding, I read this blog all the time :)

  32. I too am "mourning" the removal of these tasty treats!! I've even gone so far as to start a petition so they'll have a permanent presence on MCD's menus! Sign and pass along!!

  33. Pleeeeeeeeeeeease bring it back!

  34. Is there a way to get the receipt to make them. They shouldn't turn people on to them then stop. HOW RUDE...

  35. McDonald's got it right with this pie. Other than this one the only other pie I liked was the lemon and I haven't seen that one around in a good ten years. This pie is scrumptious, between the strawberry and the cream it almost gives the flavor of a shortcake in the crust. It really sucks they only have these for a few weeks in the spring.

  36. Yes but plants aren't centiate silly.

  37. Being vegan, I wouldn't touch it, but the coloring used is Red #40, not carmine, and there don't appear to be any other animal flesh ingredients.
