McDonald's Mighty Wings are a new, limited-time offer of bone-in chicken wing pieces with a "bold [and] spicy" breading.
A 3-piece order was $2.99.
I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the wing pieces, which were noticeably bigger than my beloved KFC Hot Wings (according to their respective websites, Mighty Wings weigh in at about 31 grams each while Hot Wings are 22g each). Before you think the size difference must be due to the breading, the Mighty Wings' breading is actually thinner than you'd find on a typical Hot Wing. The size makes it a bit difficult to dip though; McDonald's might want to go with a wider, shorter sauce container for these.
The breading on the Mighty Wings seems have a bit of bread crumbs in it or corn meal or both. The result was a light but very crispy layer that doesn't fail to satisfy.
The seasoning was a surprise, as the wings are legitimately spicy. I expected a little bit of heat with the a light sprinkling of red powder on the breading, but I figured McDonald's would go the mainstream route with a mildly spicy seasoning (i.e. more like Hot Wings).
Beyond the spicy hit, there was an enjoyable seasoned flavor to the breading.
Inside, the chicken was juicy and fairly tender.
Overall, Mighty Wings were pretty good all around from the crispy breading, the spicy seasoning, and the tasty moist chicken inside. I'm not entirely convinced they're worth the $1 a piece price tag (less if you buy more; the 10 piece is $8.99 in my area), but I didn't regret buying them.

Wow, whats with the prices of wings, for $1 each, I'd go for the 4pc McNugget or McChicken
ReplyDeleteWings should never be breaded.
ReplyDeleteJust deep fry and sauced.
I'm generally not a fan of topped fries, and the Buffalo Blue Cheese Burger didn't really appeal to me, but these actually look pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI tried these today and I love the breading but I think these would be even better boneless.
ReplyDeleteWas pleasantly surprised. Not bad
ReplyDelete4pc McNuggets cost $1.29, not a dollar.
ReplyDeleteJust finished off a ten piece. Better than I thought they would be. The price might be what keeps them from taking off though. It's still just McDonald's. Many other places have deals like fifty cents per wing, so will be hard to compete with that without coupons.
ReplyDeleteThey don't even offer 4pc McNuggets in my area by themselves, they used to have it with the mini meals, maybe they still do, but I've tried to ask for them by themselves and was told they don't sell them outside of in a meal, 6 piece is the minimum... a 6 piece is around $3, 10 piece over $4.. so when I just want a few nuggets I almost always go to Burger King or Wendy's. Guess it's just up to the individual franchises.
ReplyDeleteSaw this at a local McD...
ReplyDeletePlease explain to me why these have blue cheese crumbles yet ranch dressing. Just have blue cheese dressing.
ReplyDeleteI was pleasantly surprised at how good these wings tasted. We only got the 3 pack as well, which makes for a nice snack. Our local McD's sells them for $3.29, so at $1.10 per piece it makes for a pricey "platter" for your next football party.
ReplyDeleteMy box had 2 drummies and one flat. Next time I'm going to ask for all flats, to see if they'll do that.
They looked and tasted good in the beginning, but became cold real fast. When cold, they really didn't taste good at all.
ReplyDeleteTrue. They should include a choice of wing sauce at that price, not the same sauces as for the nuggets. I didn't think they were that spicy, but they tasted good.
ReplyDeleteTheir chili cheese fries are pretty good.. had a bit of a kick last time I got them, though it's admittedly been a year or two, Carl's Jr's is a bit inconvenient for me compared to other similar places. Topping Crisscut fries sounds like a great idea.
ReplyDeleteDelicious leave them on the menu my family are addicted to them
ReplyDeletewanna go to mcdonald's
ReplyDeleteI was also very pleasantly surprised by these. Amazed I was eating McDonalds food actually. I actually like hot wings that have a crunchy breading and aren't _dripping_ in sauce and these are just like that.
ReplyDeleteThe price is a little high, but at least you're getting nice meaty wings. I've had similar priced wings that were way less meaty at other places.
re: the poster with the chicken and waffles pic, these actually probably would go quite nicely with some maple syrup and waffles, just spicy enough to benefit from the sweet counterpoint.
I ate a 5 piece order. The breading was good and the seasoning had a kick. The wings are larger than most to McDonald's credit.
ReplyDeleteThe wings were cooked just done (no blood) however they were served under-cooked to my taste. The meat at the joint ends was tough and chewy, a sign of not being not cooked long enough.
Other than this one fault ,in my opinion, they could be a winner..
I will give them 1 more try and if they are not cooked to my taste I am done.
I finally got around to trying one of these today at the Napoleon, Ohio KFC. They offer it in white or dark meat which leads me to believe they use the new boneless pieces in the sandwich. The mayo was more like the pepper mayo that Hazer described in his comment.
ReplyDeleteOne word....Horrible.....Mine was to crispy.....so it over powered the
ReplyDeletechicken meat, and the spices over powered the crispy coating.....
In a nut shell, it is good that it is limited for my taste.....and I love
my McDonalds.....
The wings were a good size and would have been a good buy had they not been so overly hot spicy hot. I wish they would offer them in regular and spicy. I would probably be in there everyday. As it is now, I think I will take a pass.
ReplyDeleteI had a 5 piece along with a small fries and it was plenty of food for sure. I love breaded wings(like Hooters makes). These are large wings and with the breading make them even larger. 5 non breaded wings would not make a meal. I did not find them to be spicy enough for my taste. They need some wing sauce to dip them in. At a dollar a piece they match up pricewise with most wing places in my area for bone in wings. Boneless wings can be found for much cheaper though
ReplyDeleteTried them last night. THEY ARE HORRIBLE! They are covered with the same crust as Macnuggets with cayenne. The ranch dip tastes like lite mayo with no flavor. Don't waste your money!
ReplyDeleteI've bought them twice at 2 different McDonalds and the only problem I've found is quality control over the spices. The first batch was spicy and good but the batch I bought yesterday was Tijuana hot and if they didn't cost a buck a piece I would have thrown them away.I just took off most of the breading. That's not suppose to happen
ReplyDeleteDid anyone leaving a comment graduate 6th grade?
ReplyDeleteYes. I would guess the majority of us graduated from the 6th grade.
ReplyDeleteI tried the 5-piece. It had a decent taste but overly spicy. Very, very, very disappointed though - at $1 a piece, I expected full wings, not wing sections - there's other places that charge half that (or even less) per wing section. I'll stick with Church's or even KFC or Popeye's where I can get full wings and be asked if I want spicy, extra spicy, regular, crispy, extra crispy.
ReplyDeletei wonder how McDonald's faked the chicken considering the history of their mcnuggets meat
ReplyDeleteJust had these for the first time today. I asked the counter lady if the wings had bones; she said no. I ordered 5, ate 3, threw out the other 2. These are very strange wings with rather large, long, perfectly symmetrical bones (2 per piece). Are these made from some kind of genetically engineered poultry? Didn't think they were very tasty, and didn't like all of the gristle and stringy guts or blood vessel remains. Wouldn't want to give them to a child. Dips were hard to use and not enough for five wings. Really need to order extra sauce, no doubt at an extra charge. The fries in the combo were enough to feed a small army. Two of us could only eat about one-fourth of them. Back to the BigMac.
ReplyDeleteI just ate 10 mighty wings, 20 chicken nuggets, large fry and large drink. Was $17 but it was pretty good I must admit.
ReplyDeleteWell at least you got some protein, lol seems like a lot of food but I suppose if you're young and an athlete it's not too crazy.
