Review: Starbucks - Raspberry Blueberry Donut

Starbucks' Raspberry Blueberry Donut is part of their new, upgraded La Boulange bakery line (basically they bought a bakery chain to improve their baked goods selection). It's a warmed yeast donut filled with raspberry and blueberry jam.

I picked one up for $1.95.

The turbo convection oven they use to warm these works pretty well. There's just a bit of a crust and the crumb was warmed enough to feel almost fresh. Apparently, they use a brioche dough with lots of butter and eggs, but it felt more or less like a pillowy yeast donut to me.

I liked that this wasn't glazed and was just lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar instead.

The blueberry and raspberry jam inside is a step up from the typical donut jelly. It's thicker and flecked with raspberry seeds. There's a more distinct berry flavor without being too sweet.

Overall, I enjoyed Starbucks' Raspberry Blueberry Donut quite a bit. The warming gave it a really nice texture and the jam packs a lot of flavor without too much in the way of sugar.

  1. I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that none of my local Starbucks have rolled out the "La Boulange" line of baked goods yet.

On one hand, some of the items you've reviewed here look *delicious* (such as this one... and that butternut squash croissant you reviewed recently).

On the other hand, it's probably just as well that I can't give in to the temptation to spend money on them (Starbucks is pretty expensive).

  2. Yeah I hear ya. The $5 plus for a drink and baked good is enough to buy a meal elsewhere.
