Review: Real Good Foods - Chicken Burrito Bowl

The packaging for Real Good Foods' Chicken Burrito Bowl.

Real Good Foods' Chicken Burrito Bowl offers a combination of chicken breast strips with riced cauliflower, Monterey jack cheese, and black beans. It's basically the same as Real Good Foods' Steak Burrito Bowl but with chicken instead of beef.

The 9-oz box cost me $2.99 on sale. The frozen meal caters to those following keto diets as the box lists 8g net carbs and 33g of protein on the front.

Where the steak version offered fine shreds of beef, the Chicken Burrito Bowl fared better with some decent chunks of moist, lightly seasoned chicken although some were oddly shredded and looked almost like they had been lightly chewed rather than cut. Still, some pieces had a nice, meaty chew to them.

The rice cauliflower had a firmer texture than rice as well as a lack of any tackiness. It did exhibit a granular mouthfeel though. It also combined with some of the cheese to form a weird lattice texture.

The Monterey jack cheese was the most abundant ingredient according to the box but lacked in the flavor department and didn't develop much gooeyness.

The beans were tender and added an enjoyable earthiness that I could have used more of.

The main flavor driver of the bowl was a red sauce that wasn't mentioned on the box. It contributed some heat and tang but was otherwise lightly seasoned and lacked complexity.

As Read Good Foods Chicken Burrito Bowl is mostly the same as their Steak Burrito Bowl, it suffers from the same issue--it's a little boring and could use more flavor.
