Review: KFC - Saucy Nuggets

A bowl of KFC Honey Sriracha Saucy Nuggets.

KFC's Saucy Nuggets feature the fast-food chain's white-meat chicken nuggets tossed in one of five sauces: Nashville Hot, Georgia Gold, new Honey Sriracha, new Korean BBQ, and new Sticky Chicky Sweet 'n Sour Sauce.

A 10-piece order costs $5.99 and I went and got one each of the new flavors (Honey Sriracha, Korean BBQ, and Sticky Chicky) since I've already covered Nashville Hot and Georgia Gold before. There's currently a deal where you can get a 10-piece Saucy Nuggets for free with an online order of $10 or more so I was able to save a bit.

KFC Nuggets don't seem like the best candidates to be tossed in sauce as they're not all that crispy to begin with. Sure enough, even at the restaurant, the Saucy Nuggets offered just occasional bits of crispiness.

The nuggets felt slightly smaller than traditional ground-meat chicken nuggets but that might be due to them being thicker but with less width. They were pretty salty but moist-to-juicy inside.

KFC's Honey Sriracha is a sweet heat sauce featuring a blend of red chili peppers, garlic, and honey. It was the spiciest of the three sauces with a moderate heat that got my nose running in short order. It delivered on the sweet heat premise but lacked the distinctive qualities of honey and sriracha sauce.

KFC's Korean BBQ features a sweet and savory umami sauce made with soy sauce, garlic, sugar, and sesame. It was sweet but not as much as the other two sauces. There was a definite soy sauce base to it as well as a garlicky note and fermented funk. It's not described as such but there's also a mild heat to the sauce. The sesame oil flavor didn't really shine through.

The new Sticky Chicky Sweet 'n Sour Sauce offers a sweet and tangy sauce featuring pineapple, garlic, vinegar, and chili. Even more than the Honey Sriracha, the Sticky Chicky sauce lacked definitive notes of any of the listed ingredients. It was a sweet and sour sauce in a generic sense and didn't taste spicy at all. It didn't particularly taste like pineapple, garlic, vinegar or chili.

Overall, KFC's Saucy Nuggets and the new sauce choices were just okay for me. The Korean BBQ flavor stood out the most but I'd stick with the returning Nashville Hot and Georgia Gold flavors for more unique flavors and crispier nuggets (the two returning sauces are oil-based while the new ones are water-based).
