Review: Good Humor - Mounds Ice Cream Bars

Good Humor's Mounds Ice Cream Bars are a new add to the Good Humor ice cream portfolio and consist of coconut-flavored light ice cream with coconut flakes dipped in a dark chocolate flavored coating.

There are 6 bars to an 18-fl-oz box. One of my local supermarket has these selling for a regular price of $4.29, but I raided one of these from my brother's fridge (money saved!).

If you're looking for a lighter ice cream snack, Mounds Cream Bars are a little bit smaller than the norm and resemble an overgrown Mounds candy section. The light ice cream center is made with non-fat milk among its chief ingredients.

More importantly, it tastes like what you'd expect from a Mounds ice cream bar. The dark chocolate flavored coating has that same slightly bitter chocolate flavor, but obviously, it melts a lot more easily, which like most candy-bar-styled ice cream bars requires you to be more careful to prevent too much of a mess. Also, the chocolate flavored layer is fairly thin and fragile.

The inside is light ice cream which isn't as creamy as regular and super premium. I didn't mind it as it was creamy enough, but my brother and sister-in-law dismissed the bars for the lack of creaminess (they prefer the super rich, super creamy flavor of Häagen-Dazs). I like the balanced coconut flavor and the occasional bits of coconut. The bits are fairly sparse, but they do enough to remind you of a regular Mounds.

Overall, I thought Mounds Ice Cream Bars captured the Mound experience quite successfully in ice cream form and recommend it to any fans of Mounds candy bars. Now, if only they made an Almond Joy version.
