Review: Burger King - Bacon Cheesy Tots

Open container of Burger King Bacon Cheesy Tots.

Burger King's Bacon Cheesy Tots feature melted cheese potato bites with bacon bits, covered in a bread crumb coating and deep-fried.

An order of eight cost me $2.69.

On the basic level, these are basically tater tots mixed with cheese before being breaded and deep-fried.

The breading gives it a different feel than regular tater tots. It's thicker and slightly crispier with a rougher crust. I'm not sure if it's a fundamental change or just an odd occurrence but these had a crust that was slightly less breadcrumb-y and more fried-batter-like than I remember getting with the regular Cheesy Tots. While I considered the breading on the regular Cheesy Tots to be light and crispy, the crust on the Bacon Cheesy Tots was thick and still crispy, but also a little chewy.

Cross-section of Burger King's Bacon Cheesy Tots.

Inside the potatoes were soft and a slightly too mushy. They're joined by a melted cheese sauce that was mostly American cheese in flavor. However, there was little in the way of bacon with only a couple of diced ham-like pieces that I could spot. While visually sparse, the taste was nonexistent.

Taken altogether, Burger King's Bacon Cheesy Tots were enjoyable enough in that you can't really go wrong with breaded and deep-fried cheese and potatoes. Unfortunately, the lack of bacon makes a good case for a name change.
