Review: Mauna Loa - Maui Onion & Garlic Macadamia Nuts

Another weekend, another can of macadamia nuts. This time I'm eating Mauna Loa Maui Onion & Garlic Macadamias from the great state of Hawaii (okay, so they're all from Hawaii).

As a souvenir brought back from Hawaii by my brother, it cost me nothing. But the taste of the island does not come cheap here on the mainland. You're looking at around $5 bucks a pop (4.5 ounce can) in sunny California.

If you've ever tried Maui Onion kettle chips, the taste of Mauna Loa Maui Onion & Garlic Macadamias will be quite familiar to you. The nuts have a strong, distinct onion sweetness indicative of Maui onions; it's way stronger than the normal onion flavor. It's tinged with garlic for good measure.

The flavor is pretty enjoyable, but a little too intense, I think, for macadamia nuts. You lose a bit of the nut's flavor as it's lost in the shuffle.

But, if you like the taste of sweet onions and garlic paired with the texture and buttery nuttiness of macadamias these are worth a try. They're not my favorite, but they might be yours.
