Review: Krispy Kreme - Caramel Chocolate Chip Cake Donut

Krispy Kreme's limited-time Caramel Chocolate Chip Cake Donut features a chocolate cake donut topped with caramel icing and Ghiradelli chocolate chips.

My nearest Krispy Kreme sells them for $1.19 each.

The chocolate cake donut was moist, but not soggy, and had a pleasant cocoa flavor to it. It's iced and then dipped into caramel icing. I wished it was just one or the other as the combination of the two makes it overly sweet and hard to pick out the other flavors.

The caramel icing is very much like sweet Kraft caramel, which is to say it's mostly sweet and lacks more than a modicum of caramel flavor and buttery notes.

The chocolate chips are miniature, but deliver a fairly rich chocolaty flavor. They fall off the icing somewhat easily and you're bound to lose a few, unless you're careful.

Overall, Krispy Kreme's Caramel Chocolate Chip Cake Donut misses out on the deeper notes of caramel, and opts to keep it sweet and simple (but mostly sweet). The end result is a light bit of caramel and chocolate with a heavy dose of sugary sweetness.
