Review: Sonic - Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog

Sonic's Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog is one of two pretzel dogs they're offering this summer (the other being the plain Original Pretzel Dog) and features a beef hot dog nestled in a warm, soft pretzel bun, topped with bacon, grilled onions, and warm cheese sauce.

Sonic has them going for $2.49 each in my area.

Individually, the ingredients here were all well-executed: the bacon was thoroughly crispy; the grilled onions were cooked just right with just a bit of resistance; and the cheese sauce was smooth and melty.

In terms of flavor, the bacon lacked a bit; the grilled onions delivered a really nice sweetness; and the cheese sauce tasted mostly of melted American.

The hot dog had a little bit of snap and was juicy and flavorful, while the bun had a squishy thick softness, slight chew, and held together very well. Compared to Wendy's pretzel bun, it has a bit more flavor, is softer, and isn't as dense.

The thing is it didn't quite fit together right for me. The cheese was a little overwhelming and between it, the bacon, and hot dog, the end result was too salty, making it hard to pick out the individual flavors.

The bun was thick enough that I thought it would cut against the saltiness a bit, but it lost out. More of the delicate, sweet onions might have helped.

Overall, I was hoping to like Sonic's Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog more than I did. It wasn't that it was poorly made so much that I just didn't enjoy the overly salty combination like I thought I would. I liked the bun, but I think the plain original version might be a better bet for me.

  1. Looks pretty damn good to me. Maybe add some chili on top :)

  3. It does look good.. but I was raised on 'naked' dogs (maybe it was a western MA thing?)

  4. I had one without onions and enjoyed it immensely.

  5. Yeah, I like Sonic's chili so I think that might have been the way to go.

  6. I tried one today and it was so bland :( I can't seem to enjoy anything from Taco Bell these days either. Guess my preferences are changing.

  7. Really? It might be location but from the few times I've ordered chili cheese fries my chili always seems to have a burnt taste to it.

  8. Great dog! Everything worked well together. The pretzel bun is definitely a standout--it was soft and delicious. I hope Sonic adds these to their permanent menu. If so, I may have to eat hot dogs more often, which I usually avoid at all costs.

  9. I had no idea they put onions on that certain one (as onions aren't advertised in the menu picture), so after I ordered one, I noticed the onions. I'm not a personal fan of onions, so it was really disappointing, because they were really tiny and hard to pick off. So the next time I went to Sonic, I made sure to mention I wanted one without onions. Now, the most recent time I went there, I noticed they added little stickers to their menus citing that they put onions on them. I guess enough people were annoyed with the onions. hah

  10. I can't say that I've had that problem before, but, like you say, it could be the location.

I had one last week. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste. I am typically a turkey dog kinda' guy. But this worked for me. I do agree the bacon had no flavor or the other flavors just plain over powered it.

  12. The ones my wife and I got were a real bummer. They had hardly any cheese, three small pieces of bacon and some onions. They were nothing like the ones depicted in the TV commercial. I'll never order another one. Sonic is becoming a big let down. All hype and very little in the delivery department. Zero bang for your buck.

  13. I just got done trying one. I two didn't know they came with onions and don't like onions in the slightest (had to pick them off). However, the main reason I'm posting is to say...It's not a "pretzel" bun. It's the same old hotdog bun found anywhere else it's just colored darker and has little slice marks in it. It doesn't taste or have the texture of any pretzel I've ever tasted. It's just hype, and I for one will not order it again.

  14. Tried the pretzel dog at Sonic. While my bacon cheese dog looked nothing like the photos posted (read: skimpier), my biggest objection and why I will not buy another pretzel dog was due to the COLD BUN. I don't know if Sonic meant the pretzel bun to be warmed or heated in anyway but the two I got were stone cold. i.e. slightly above room temperature.
I brought the second one home, removed the dog, warmed up the "bun" and it was TONS BETTER. Still not worth driving 65+ miles to get one.

Just had Wendy's pretzel bun burger - WOW!!!!
