Review: Subway - Applewood Pulled Pork Sub

Subway's new, limited-time Applewood Pulled Pork sub sandwich features slow-cooked pulled pork covered in a sweet and smoky barbecue sauce, along with your choice of bread and condiments. I went with lettuce, pickles, and red onions on Italian bread.

A footlong sandwich was $6.95 (cheaper than the previous pulled pork, which was $7.50!)

Compared to the last time they tried offering pulled pork, the pork this time had a better, meatier (but still tender) texture and just plain better look to it (which is not saying much because it was kinda pink and mushy last time around).

It was still mostly tiny shreds of pork, but there were the (very) occasional small strips. I even found a burnt end or two! There was a good porky flavor to it plus a touch of smoke. For a Subway meat (i.e. the steak and previous barbecue meats), the new pulled pork is a pretty nice option.

The barbecue sauce doesn't seem to be tomato based. It's sweet and smoky with just a slight tang. Unlike, say, the Arby-Q, the meat wasn't dripping in it, so I could actually taste the pork. If you prefer it doused with sauce, it's definitely do-able but not my preference. In fact, the meat seems good enough on its own to forgo the barbecue sauce altogether (I was told there's already some sauce on the meat though).

As usual, the veggies were fresh and the slightly toasted bread was okay. The pickles act to cut against the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. I probably could have used a bit more onions though; they were kinda MIA flavor-wise. The lettuce was a bit of crisp filler.

Overall, the Applewood Pulled Pork sub offers a tasty bit of change from the regular Subway menu. I liked the overall flavor, the measured use of barbecue sauce, and the texture of the meat. It's not going to challenge any decent barbecue joints, but I enjoyed eating it.
