Review: Wetzel's Pretzels - Original Pretzel

In the shopping malls in my area, Wetzel's Pretzels and Auntie Anne's tend to vie for the same territory. Both offer similar inventories but Wetzel's tends to cost a little less.

When I picked up this Original Pretzel (buttered without added pretzel salt), they were running a two for $4 special, but I ended up just getting one for $2.49.

The pretzel I received didn't have the typical brown sheen of a soft pretzel and had more of a mottled brown and white thing going on. It's not the most attractive of pretzels but tasted okay.

It still had just a slight bit of a crust and was dense, warm, and soft.

What it lacked was a definite pretzel flavor and it ended feeling more like a fresh-baked dinner roll or breadstick. While I like fresh-baked bread as a general rule, I was expecting more pretzel-ness.

Overall, Wetzel's Original Pretzel (at least the one I bought) made for some warm, lightly-buttered bread, which is nice, but it just wasn't very pretzel-tasting. $2.49 is pretty cheap for mall food though.
