Frozen Friday: Michael Angelo's - Rigatoni with Sausage and Meatballs

Michael Angelo's Rigatoni with Sausage and Meatballs features rigatoni pasta with Italian-style beef meatballs and sausage in a sauce of vine-ripened tomatoes with a sprinkling of (mostly mozzarella) cheese on top.

I picked an 11-oz package up for $1.99 on sale.

If you've been hankering for a Michael Angelo's frozen meal with both their sausage and meatballs together, this seems to be the impetus behind the Rigatoni with Sausage and Meatballs. Because, otherwise it's not much different from their other tomato-sauce pasta dishes.

The rigatoni came firm and pretty close to al dente. It's formed to a fairly wide diameter and held the sauce well. It helps that the sauce is very thick without any of the wateriness you might get in other frozen meals or canned pasta sauces (and even some restaurants).

The sauce is mostly just tomato with just a little bit of seasoning. I'm not ashamed to say (okay, maybe a little) that I spooned (forked up?) all the leftover sauce.

The melted cheese was gooey and added a touch of creaminess.

The meatballs were coarsely formed with a nice browned shell and moist interior. They tasted really good! The sausage came in two or three slices and carried a strong herby flavor with just a slight kick. Of the two, the flavor was more intense in the sausage.

Overall, Michael Angelo's Rigatoni with Sausage and Meatballs was thoroughly enjoyable. There was an ideal balance and variety of tasty meat, pasta, and sauce (although maybe a little more cheese would be better). No other frozen Italian brand comes close in terms of quality or taste. I usually don't see it on sale as low as $1.99 so I snapped up quite a few.
