Review: Lay's Chicken & Waffles Potato Chips

Frito Lay recently brought back their "Do Us a Flavor" chip flavors for a limited time. Since I missed them the first time around, I picked up a bag of Lay's Chicken & Waffles-flavored potato chips because it sounded the weirdest of the three (the other two are Sriracha and Cheesy Garlic Bread).

A 9.5-ounce bag was on sale for $2.50.

These smell and taste weird. You might like them if you enjoy putting syrup on potato chips (or think it would be a good idea).

Before even biting into one, I get a whiff of syrupy maple but somehow not in a good way.

The initial taste is an slightly-off caramelly maple syrup and waffle affair followed by a chicken flavor that reminds me of Nabisco's Chicken in a Biskit crackers.

Overall, while these are edible I'm can't say I enjoyed Lay's Chicken & Waffles-flavored potato chips at all. That weird maple syrup flavor on a potato chip just does not work for me. I think I can get behind just the chicken flavor divorced from the sweetness though. I imagine Canada's current "Do Us a Flavour" candidate Maple Moose to be similar to this.

I had these when they were testing them. Terrible. The siracha (sp) were bad..these were terrible!

  2. While I wasn't really in love with any of the Do Us a Flavor chips, I did end up liking these the most of the three. The Cheesy Garlic Bread chips were way too salty for me, and the Sriracha chips didn't seem to have much flavor to me (they just tasted like generic hot chips).

  3. Yeah... I just can't get behind that weird sweetness on top of the standard potato chip taste.

  4. I tried these the other day. I thought they tasted like I had stuck my tongue in some grease and then poured just barely flavored syrup on top. Made me ill after eating some.

  5. It's definitely a bit weird, but for some reason it didn't bother me that much. They were definitely more enjoyable than my other experience with sweet chips, which were those weird flavors of Pringles they came out with last year (I think I tried both the Cinnamon & Sugar and the Pumpkin Pie ones, and they were both pretty bad).

  6. These were my favorite of the three, but that's not saying much. The garlic bread ones were way way too strong, and I hate spicy things so I didn't even try the sriracha ones. After I tried these, I tossed away the rest of the bag.

  7. I agree, they were edible but pretty weird.. I'd never get them again. I actually like the Cheesy Garlic Bread chips.. sure they're salty, I don't know if I'd eat a whole bag at once, but a friend bought one the other day and I tried a few.. they tasted about how I would expect that flavor to taste.
